Dozens of video platforms and recording tools are compared here on features like streaming options, privacy compliance, and editing capabilities.

When it comes to how students can view recorded videos, several platforms stand out. YouTube allows streaming and downloading, but videos must be posted in a private channel that students are invited to, and it has limited captioning options. In contrast, the GauchoCast Server is recommended for its FERPA compliance, allowing both streaming and downloadable options, with no file size limits and many statistics available for instructors. Box (UCSB accounts) and Google Drive (UCSB accounts) both offer streaming capabilities, but they have restrictions; Box limits file sizes to 15GB per file and advises against use due to limited storage capacity, while Google Drive also has unlimited storage but warns that downloading videos is preventable.

In terms of video recording software, Panopto Recorder excels with features that include recording face, screen, and multiple screens simultaneously, as well as slide text indexing. It allows users to upload videos directly to GauchoCast or save them to a local computer, and it includes free AI captioning in its editing tools. Zoom can also be used for recording class meetings, but students must be notified beforehand. The recordings can be saved to a local computer, similar to the PowerPoint Recorder and iPad screen recorder, which saves videos to iCloud.

The GauchoCast Server is particularly noteworthy for its comprehensive features, allowing students to stream videos, download them (though this can be prevented), and embed or link videos directly in GauchoSpace. It supports unlimited file sizes, provides free AI captioning, and is FERPA compliant, making it a robust choice for educational settings. YouTube, while popular, has limitations such as a cap on captioning options and file size, which may hinder its effectiveness for educational purposes.
